A Sign Across My Face

4 x 10 x 1 inches

Mirror, ponytail, hair tie

A translucent film of a vagina stretches across an oval mirror with its opening ajar for the mirror to be utilized. A clear reflection of the viewer can be seen in the small gap. A slim ponytail of hair hangs center, attached to the bottom of the mirror, assuming the role of a non-functional handle. Two fundamental markers behind the category female are on display: a vagina and, optimally, long hair. Set at eye level, the mirror then becomes a face itself, particularly when the viewer finds their own eyes in its reflection, providing the face with the gift of sight. Patriarchy assigns certain facial features to genitalia, and then takes the further leap of assumptions towards assignment of sex. While the face may be the most open characteristics one may provide toward the public, and our genitals our hidden, the opposite is demonstrated.
